Most landlords require you to have a renter’s policy that covers your personal liability.  A typical renter’s policy is set up to cover your personal liability & personal property.  Personal property is also generally covered with a specified limit for at home and another for when you are not. 

Also, if you bundle your renter’s insurance with your auto insurance the discounts can sometimes cover the cost of the renter’s policy as they are typically inexpensive yet provide a great value.
